Why Was Sean Combs Arrested?
Sean Combs was arrested in September 2024 in New York City following a grand jury indictment. He faced three federal charges:
- Sex trafficking is considered a form of modern-day slavery and involves human trafficking for sexual exploitation that is performed by force, fraud, or coercion.
- Transportation for purposes of prostitution involves moving someone across state or international borders with the intention of forcing them into illegal sexual activity.
- Racketeering refers to criminal activities that involve forcing or tricking people into giving up money or property. This can include crimes like bribery, extortion, money laundering, and obstruction of justice.
A judge denied Sean Combs’ request for bail, which means he will remain in jail until his sentencing in October 2025. A jury found Sean Combs guilty on 2 counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, which carry a combined maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
However, he was acquitted of charges related to sex trafficking and racketeering.
“[F]or years, Sean Combs used the business empire he controlled to sexually abuse and exploit women, as well as to commit other acts of violence and obstruction of justice.”
– Damian Williams, U.S. Attorney General, Southern District of New York
